Finding an addiction treatment clinic or recovery program can be challenging. Rapid “wonder treatments” include electroconvulsive therapy and Ibogaine, and can range from complicated healthcare services to natural remedies. Some therapeutic alternatives may not be available to you and some may seem appealing but ultimately may not be beneficial.
With such an abundance of technology and options, finding a treatment center has never been easier. Finding the right treatment facility, however, is a far more challenging task.
Questions You Can Ask A Treatment Program
Here are six questions to ask potential treatment programs to understand what they offer and determine if they will be suitable for you or a loved one:
1. Is the rehabilitation program committed to employing scientifically proven methods?
Some addiction treatment approaches are novel and cutting-edge, while others have established track records. Although both may have favorable qualities, it is most important that they are based on strong scientific evidence. Ask questions about the employees’ qualifications; it is not necessary for every drug addiction counselor to have a Ph.D., but it is important to confirm the skills and experience of the staff.
2. Is the program inclusive of a detox component?
Detoxification can be a dangerous process if not medically supervised. It is a misconception that there is no danger in abruptly ceasing to use substances; withdrawal symptoms can be quite serious as well as very unpleasant. In addition to the medical danger, the acute discomfort, if not properly remedied, can lead to relapse in an attempt to stop the symptoms. Inquire whether the program has medical personnel dedicated to assisting you in safely completing this withdrawal period and what protocols are in place for this process.
3. Is the program specific to my needs?
Various programs are available to meet a variety of needs; ask the following to determine if it meets your needs:
- If an inpatient program necessary, or if an outpatient program is sufficient
- The duration of the program
- Is medical detoxification included if necessary
- Is medical replacement available for withdrawal/methadone availability
- Is there a long-term resolution program to address the fundamental causes of addiction
Before you can decide which type of treatment regimen is appropriate for you, you must first answer all of these questions.
4. Is there any post-treatment rehabilitation help available at this facility?
Rehabilitation is a difficult process that may not be straightforward. You will need to determine the following:
- If the institution gives the appropriate assistance in the event of a setback to avoid complete relapse
- If the treatment facility helps you with your long-term rehabilitation
What happens after treatment is equally as important as what happens during treatment. Inquire about the support available through the programs you’re considering.
5. Is this program inclusive of family treatment and/or support?
The family is a psychological ecology; as a result, it helps to make sure that the home environment is conducive to recovery. For this reason, choosing a treatment center that incorporates your loved ones in your journey to recovery via family therapy will be important. Family therapy has two basic goals: the first is to help families develop the skills and resources they need to live free of addiction. Second, it seeks to lessen the impact of addictions on the family members of the substance user. Support from family and psychoeducation have been connected to successful recovery.
6. Is there any emphasis on physical fitness in this program?
Although physical factors including exercise and healthy eating are important components of effective addiction therapy, not all recovery facilities place equal emphasis on these programs. Ask about training and education in physiological health components, such as yoga and adventure therapy, which have been shown to be helpful in the treatment of addiction.
Additionally, while meditation is commonly thought of as a mental or religious practice, the physical benefits have been well proven. It alleviates unfavorable neuronal system states that lead to a poor immune response, chronic health issues such as diabetes and obesity and an overall feeling of physical stress that hinders addiction recovery. Mindfulness can have a direct positive impact on mental health.
